It depends on your birth year. Born 1951–1958: your RMDs start at age 73. Born 1960 or later: age 75. Born in 1959: the law as written is ambiguous, and the IRS has proposed resolving it to age 73 — the calculator uses that assumption and says so. Miss a required withdrawal and the IRS penalty is 25% of the shortfall, reduced to 10% if corrected promptly, which is why the starting year is worth getting right.
